Private employers with 100 or more employees and federal contractors with 50 or more employees report the race/ethnicity, sex, and job category of their workforce for a payroll period the employer selects between October 1 and December 31 of the survey year (a recent year covers roughly 56 million employees at about 73,000 employers). Each row is an aggregate cell defined by geography and industry (2- and 3-digit NAICS 2017 codes). Geography nests from county up to nation (1 nation, 4 census regions, 9 census divisions, 51 states including DC, and about 2,964 counties); the roughly 978 Core-Based Statistical Areas are aggregated from a U.S. Census 2018 county delineation and are reported separately because 61 of them cross state, division, or region lines. A blank geography or NAICS value denotes an aggregate (marginal total) across that dimension. Measures are employee counts cross-tabulated by the seven EEO-1 race/ethnicity groups, two sexes, and ten job categories, plus an establishment count. To protect employee identities, cells pass through EEOC primary and secondary confidentiality suppression: a suppressed cell is published as an asterisk (*) in the source file and loaded here as NULL. Filing is mandatory under Section 709(c) of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (42 U.S.C. 2000e-8(c)); EEOC uses the data to study employment patterns of minorities and women by industry and geography and to support enforcement and research, and Section 709(e) prohibits release of individually identifiable information. Coverage is the 50 states and DC; the PUF spans survey years 2014-2023.'
